What Do You Need to Get Married in Belize?

If you’re hoping to get married in Belize legally, you’ll be happy to hear it’s a fairly straightforward process. Or, you can do this part at home before you have your ceremony in Belize.

Here’s what you need to know for the legal stuff:

• You must be in Belize for at least 3 days (72 hours) before applying to get married.
• Applications should be completed with the Registrar General’s Office in Belize City.
• To apply, you need to have a valid passport or other proof of citizenship. If one or both of you aren’t American citizens, refer to Citizenship and Immigration Services.
• If one or both partner(s) has been previously married, you must have a certified or original copy of your divorce decree or a death certificate for your previous spouse.
• A Belize marriage license costs $100 per couple, plus a $5 administrative fee.
• It takes two days to obtain your license after applying.
• Two witnesses must be present at your ceremony.
• After the ceremony, you’ll need to register your marriage with the Belize Registry Department.

If a beach wedding is your dream, you can turn that into a reality in Belize! I’m talking an idyllic ceremony overlooking the picturesque Caribbean Sea. Whether you want a secluded, intimate wedding or to share your special moment at a popular beach, the opportunities are endless.

The most iconic beach wedding destination in Belize is Ambergris Caye, Belize’s largest island and a popular vacation spot.

Other beautiful islands perfect for an elopement are South Water Caye, Caye Caulker, and the private island of St. George’s Caye.

Cascading Waterfalls

If you’re looking to get adventurous, you can make your way to a waterfall for your Belize wedding. Talk about an amazing backdrop!

Big Rock Falls is a popular, picturesque gem with a 150-foot waterfall if you’re up for a hike. 

Butterfly Falls is another gem that’s surrounded by lush rainforests. To access this private waterfall, you’d have to stay at Hidden Valley Inn.

While these are just a couple of the best waterfall destinations for eloping in Belize, Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve features several others.

Lush Rainforests

If saying your vows surrounded by nature and wildlife sounds like the perfect scene for you, Belize can deliver! About half of Belize is covered in pristine rainforests, and they’re some of the most incredible in the world.

Think boardwalks, peaceful sounds, colorful flora, and flowing rivers. In southern Belize, Moho River is an amazing rainforest river.  For a mix of adventure and wildlife, say your vows at Mayflower Bocawina National Park amidst the tropical rainforest.

Belize is one of the only places that allows wedding ceremonies at Maya sites, which you can find many of. These offer a unique and fascinating backdrop.

When To Have a Belize Wedding

If I’m being honest, Belize destination weddings are incredible year-round! The temperature itself is warm all year, with highs usually in the 80s and lows usually in the low to mid-70s. With that said, there are various factors to consider when planning your Belize elopement.

Belize is considered to have two seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season is from February to May. The rainy season is from June through January but slightly less rainy from November through January. 

Different parts of Belize will affect the weather, too. Southern Belize gets the most rainfall during the rainy season, while other areas may only see rain once or twice a week.

In terms of affordability, you may also want to consider that the peak season (late November – mid-April) brings in a lot of tourists so prices are higher.

I recommend May or early November to have a Belize wedding with the fewest crowds and the best possible weather. But, again, Belize is magical no matter when you choose to elope!
