A destination wedding in Europe is a dream for many couples around the world! The good news is that with some planning, it’s totally doable. 

Marriage License

Guidelines for obtaining a marriage license vary by country. You can find country-specific requirements at usembassy.gov or the site for your country’s embassy. Things you’ll need to know are:

• Residency requirements
• Necessary documents needed (passport, birth certificates, proof of divorce, etc.)
• Waiting period time

Some countries, such as Spain, require one or both partners to be legal residents. However, you can avoid this problem by officially getting married in your home state, then heading off to Europe for your ceremony. This may be the way to go if you don’t want to deal with the legalities of getting married in a new-to-you country. I actually prefer this option!

Best Time to Elope in Europe

To enjoy the benefits of both peak-season and off-season, plan your destination wedding in Europe during the shoulder season. The shoulder season is from April to June and September to October. During shoulder season, the weather is nice and there are fewer crowds.

It also depends on what part of Europe you’re going to. Paris is quieter in July and August. If you’re a hiker interested in the Alps, early fall is a great time to go to enjoy excellent weather and avoid icy trails.

If you really want to avoid crowds, plan your wedding for Winter or early Spring. Just keep in mind that it can get cold depending on which country you go to.
